I need to extend my visa/residence permit: How do I proceed?

Important: this information as well as contact and support you find at the end of this post  only applies to students and applicants of weißensee kunsthochschule berlin.
New procedure for making appointments
LEA is fundamentally changing the procedure for allocating appointments with immediate effect. Appointments can no longer be booked via the previous Online Appointment System (OTV). The OTV, has now been permanently decommissioned.
The main reason for this decision is that, in particular, providers operating on the Internet had increasingly siphoned off the dates available on OTV in order to sell them. Many appointments were not available to our customers or were only available at a fee. This abusive business model is now being deprived of its basis.

You can now apply online: Please only use the LEA's online application form to apply for a residence permit for study purposes.
Further information and the digital application can be found directly on the homepage: https://www.berlin.de/einwanderung/

The direct link to the digital application and the required documents can be found here: https://www.berlin.de/einwanderung/ueber-uns/aktuelles/artikel.1499961.php

If you need to extend your residence permit:
Please also take a look at the supplementary sheet of your residence permit to see whether a study forecast (Studienprognose) is required for the extension!
Important: Please register for an appointment about 4-6 weeks before your residence permit expires!

Additional information:

- the information and the online application are currently only available in the German version. The English version will be available in the first quarter of 2025.

- Study forecast: this can also be uploaded temporarily from the next hotfix in 3 weeks together with the enrolment. With the next major update in the first quarter of 2025, the intention is to request the study forecast or alternatively a transcript of records in extension cases. This will then have its own field. Until then, the LEA will request the study forecast in case of doubt.
- After submitting your data in the online application, a PDF document will be displayed to confirm your application. Please be sure to save this document and print it out if possible. You can present the PDF document to other authorities or employers, for example, as proof of the continued validity of your current residence permit. This also applies to all ancillary provisions of these documents, particularly with regard to the type and scope of authorised gainful employment.
- There will always be queries, which can still be communicated via the contact form.    Enquiries about the processing status are not relevant and will be given lower priority by the LEA.
- Emergencies, on the other hand, will continue to be considered. This option can still be selected in the contact form, but must be supported by suitable documentation.
A mere request for an appointment without suitable evidence is not an emergency. Affected persons who contact us via the contact form will be asked by email to use the digital application. These will be processed as a priority, provided they are complete.  Complete applications can usually be decided without further enquiries. If further enquiries are necessary, a delay must be expected.
- Please note when travelling abroad: re-entry to Germany is only possible with a valid residence permit, but not with the certificate to be printed out.

- The contact form is still available for urgent cases/emergencies. There is also the option of describing the circumstances or uploading flight tickets. The online application form is not intended for this, as it can only request standardised documents.

You can find all information on submitting an emergency application via the contact form here:
